I recently published an interview with Alyse Emdur about prison visiting room portraiture. Her interest is in the backdrops. The aesthetic originates from the vernacular practice of prison mural painting. While I was on Prison Photography on the Road, I visited Angola Prison in Louisiana. The same types of murals also exist in the administration offices of prisons. Here’s me, in such an office, looking confused in front of a confusing painting.
