John Sevigny at Gone City:
“Towell’s just-published series of photos of topless Haitian women receiving care in makeshift “emergency tents” after the earthquake is gratuitous, racist and disgusting.
Gratuitous because the women were in no position to say “no.” Racist, because neither he nor Magnum would dare to publish photographs of white women in similar positions. Disgusting because there’s something just plain sleazy about an aging hippie and phoney do-gooder going to the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and photographing big breasted black women on their backs while doctors race to save their lives.”
While the tone may be considered unhelpful, Sevigny has a point about the decision to take these photographs. Towell’s set I don’t think is even that good, and doesn’t add much to the understanding of Haiti today.
